The colour of Aqva Lvce Gin is crystal clear, but with a light yellow glare. On the nose delicate juniper notes are balanced with the herbal notes of bay leaves and the spicy notes of cumin. On the palate the gin is dry but smooth, with well-balanced herbal notes. Aqva Lvce Gin is very enjoyable neat.
All botanicals except for hops, bay leaves and cumin are steeped separately in neutral alcohol at room temperature for 15 days. Then they are individually distilled using two copper pot stills (from 1947) and then they are rectified three times. Hops, bay leaves and cumin are distilled with a technique called “basso bollente”, which allows to extract also some of the botanicals’ pigments.
History and curiosities
Antonio Levarin, a.k.a. Toni, fought in the Royal Navy during World War I as a mine constructor. During breaks he used to draw blowfish, whose shape remind him of mines. In a rare occasion of peace an Austro-Hungarian soldier offered gin to everyone in celebration and Toni, sipping it for the first time, fell in love with gin. When the War was over he decided to build pot stills and to secretly distill gin. This is the legend that inspired the making of Aqva Lvce Gin. The name of the gin means “water’s light”, reminding how the sea waters where lit up by exploding mines.
