The notes of juniper berries and sweet vanilla given by the Tonka beans are strong on the nose, with citrus and spicy notes in the background. On the palate Tonka Gin is a little bitter, smooth and fresh, but with strong flavours. The classic juniper notes are predominant, balanced with the touch of vanilla of the Tonka beans. It’s good both neat and mixed.
It’s a cold compound gin, which means that the botanicals are separately distilled with a peculiar cold infusion technique that, according to the creator, is unique. The gin is cloudy because it’s not filtered. It’s called “vintage” gin because the botanicals are selected according to the season, so every batch could be a little different from the others.
History and curiosities
The creator of Tonka Gin is Roby Marton, a Venetian with a lot of experience in producing and distilling spirits. His gins are distilled in a historical distillery in Bassano del Grappa and the botanicals are carefully selected by hand. For Tonka Gin, Roby Marton chose to use Tonka beans, the seeds of a South American plant that are similar to vanilla, but less sweet and with a more complex aroma. You can sip this gin neat, better yet while smoking a good cigar.
